New Shelter will Provide
Emergency and Transitional Housing
Plans for the new men’s homeless shelter are described in the developer's statement listed below that was submitted to the Chapel Hill Planning Department. The document describes construction of a 16,000 sq. ft. building located on a leased parcel of land totaling approximately 79,000 square feet.
The IFC estimates that the Community House will be serving 500 to 600 homeless men each year according to the 2010-2011 Community Development Block Grant Program Application Summary.
This facility will also be a wet shelter, it will provide accommodations for men who are actively using drugs or alcohol.
According the developer's statement the facility will house both an emergency bed and a transitional facility program. Please note that on January 11th the Town Council lifted the previous 25 bed shelter size limit.
“The IFC will develop and build a 50 -bed emergency and transitional housing facility for homeless men……”
“The Community House campus, adjacent to the United Church of Chapel Hill, will be approximately 16,000 square feet and will include floor space, emergency beds and transitional accommodations,….….”
