Others Profit when Shelter is Moved from Downtown

  • The Town of Chapel Hill
    • Wants its building back
    • Has about a $13M stake (land value plus subsidy) in the Lot 5 Redevelopment, whose higher floors will overlook the existing men's shelter
    • Has established a primary goal of "Champion Downtown"

  • UNC and its foundations own a significant portion of downtown real estate, such as the recent $46M purchase of Granville Square.
  • Downtown Merchants and Chamber of Commerce Members want the shelter out of downtown and do not care where it goes as long as it is out of downtown.
    • Panhandling will continue downtown even if the shelter is moved from it's downtown location because that is where it is easiest to panhandle.  Without the IFC presence that exists today, panhandling may even increase with a shelter move.
    • Many in IFC's Facebook group read as a who's who of downtown business owners and Chamber of Commerce members who want the shelter out of downtown.
